As part of the 2018 budget the Chancellor has asked the Law Commission to review the rules on where weddings can take place. The changes should create a “simpler and fairer system” giving couples a “meaningful choice”. For the first time outdoor weddings will be allowed, already possible in Scotland. The cost and requirements for venues should be reduced making it viable for smaller, more individual venues to host weddings.

From a wedding photography point of view, the increased variety will add to the creative possibilities allowing couples to express themselves, creating their own unique wedding. The law on wedding times has already been relaxed, so an outdoor wedding under the stars is entirely possible (weather permitting).

I recently photographed Tom and Sabina’s garden wedding, which was amazing, especially with their individual touches. They had a civil ceremony the previous day which, when the new rules are introduced wouldn’t have been needed.

I’m always amazed at the creativity of the couples whose weddings I photograph. I can’t wait to see what they’ll do with the new rules, adding their own personal touches and most importantly saving money.
